Etymology of Fertig

What does the name Fertig mean?

The roots of the distinguished German surname Fertig lie in the kingdom of Bavaria. The name is of two possible origins; firstly, it is derived from the Middle High German "vertic," meaning "skilled, dexterous, or prepared," and would have been bestowed upon the original bearer as a nickname. Alternatively, the name may be derived from the Middle High German "vierdinc" or "vierdunc," meaning "fourth," and would likely have been borne by the fourth-born son of a family; this origin, however, tends only to be found in eastern Rhineland.

Early Origins of the Fertig family

The surname Fertig was first found in the city of Isny, where the first known instance of the name occurred. This early bearer was "der Vierdunc zu Isny," and was recorded in Isny in 1250. The young Fertig family was instrumental during this early period, playing a major role in the development of medieval Bavarian society.
