Etymology of Mulqueen

What does the name Mulqueen mean?

The Mulqueen surname comes from the Gaelic O'Maolchaoin, and refers to a descendant of a devotee of St. Caoine.

Early Origins of the Mulqueen family

The surname Mulqueen was first found in Clare (Irish: An Clár) located on the west coast of Ireland in the province of Munster, where they held a family seat as followers of that ancient Irish family O'Cain. They were recorded as a bardic tribe in the annals of the Dal Cais in the 10th century. Irish history was greatly influenced by the Norman invasion of 1172, and thereafter, the surnames of Irish Gaelic clanns and septs and many of the Norman families became almost indistinguishable. This family name was found later in Mayo.
