The surname Tagliavia was first found in Palermo, where its first memories date back to a Costanzo Tagliavia, son of a Guido, famous captain of the Emperor Enrico VI, who in 1255 was elected arbiter to settle certain differences between the monastery of St. Francesco of Assisi and some ministers of Federico II of Svevia. A branch was transplanted to Naples by Vincenzo Tagliavia. - He owned 9 fiefdoms, 2 counties, 5 marquisates, 3 duchies and the principality of Castelvetrano; to enjoyed nobility in Palermo, Girgenti and Naples; wore the habit of Malta in 1590, was awarded the Golden Fleece and the grandship of Spain in 1624.
