What does the name Bulgari mean?

With regard to the family name Bulgari, it is a variant of Bulgaroni, derived from the personal name Bulgaro. This name indicates one belonging to the people of the Bulgarians, and is found in Italy from the eighth century in the Latinized forms Bulgarus, Bulgarellus, and Bulgarinus.

The popularity of this name was due to the fact that groups of Bulgarian mercenaries came to Italy with the Longobards since 858. The suffix "-oni" is one of those suffixes such as "-ino", "-etto", and "-ello", which give a particular flavor and meaning to nouns and adjectives to which they are attached. The final letter "i" of the surname denotes the plural form, illustrating the process of the surname having been passed on from one generation to the next.
