County Laois is part of the Eastern and Midland Region in the province of Leinster. Known as Queen’s County from 1556 to 1922, which is why you see many passenger records showing Queen’s County, not County Laois. It has also been known as County Leix. The modern county takes its name from Loígis, a medieval kingdom. The first people to travel through Laois were bands of hunters and gatherers over 8,500 years ago. Followed by the Neolithic period and the first farmers, their burial mounds can still be seen today.","Located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Quebec, Canada, Grosse Ile is one of 21 islands of the archipelago.
