Early Origins of the Estur family

The surname Estur was first found in Normandy (French: Normandie), the former Duchy of Normandy, where the family has been a prominent family for centuries, and held a family seat with lands and manor. The family were well established in the region of Tourlaville, near Cherburg in the Manche in Normandy and several members of the family distinguished themselves through their contributions toward the community in which they lived and were rewarded with lands, titles and letters patent confirming their nobility. Richard L'Estourmi was described as being of 'high rank" in 1066 and joined the invasion of England in that year. His younger brother Jean continued to hold the estates in Normandy and was ancestor of that branch of the family which continued to use the name Esturmi.
