Located in the Eastern and Midland region and the province of Leinster, County Offaly was formerly known as King’s County and is named after the ancient Kingdom of Uí Failghe. Offaly primarily comprises a flat landscape and is known for its extensive bog and peatlands. Evidence for the first known settlements in County Offaly is at Boora Bog, dating back to the Mesolithic era.
