The Kasparov surname is a patronymic formed from the first name Kaspar. This given name was quite popular in central Europe in the 18th century. It is derived from a Persian word which meant "treasurer," and was popularly thought to be the name of one of the three wise men (Magi); the other two being Balthasar and Melchior. Their supposed remains were brought to Cologne from Constantinople in the 12th century.
