What does the name Loones mean?

The ancient Dutch surname Loones is a toponymic surname. Loon, an Old Dutch plural for of "Lo" meaning "near/in the woods", is found in the name of multiple towns like Borgloon and Loon op Zand and in medieval counties in the Low Countries.

Giselbert van Loon (died c. 1045) is generally thought to have been the first Count of the County of Loon, now part of the modern Belgian province of Limburg. Very little is known about him except that he had two brothers, one of whom, Bishop Balderic II of Liège (died 1028) is much better recorded in the archives.

Later, Count Emmo, Immo or Emmon (d. before 1078) is another of the first Counts of Loon (or Looz.)

The name was first recorded in South Holland, a province of Holland, the most crowded province of the Netherlands. The principal cities are Rotterdam, Leyden and Shiedam. Noted is the famed castle of Teilengen where Jacqueline of Bavaria is buried. In their later history the surname became a power unto themselves and were elevated to the ranks of nobility as they grew into this most influential family.
