The surname also comes from a Spanish word "mayor," meaning "head" or "chief" that was an occupational name for the foreman of a gang of agricultural workers or the leader of a group of herdsmen.

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: Alonso Maza who immigrated to Chile in 1580; Ana Mayoral who came to New Spain in 1592; followed by Pablo De Mayol in 1599 with his entire family. Among the later settlers were Santiago Mayoral, a Spanish solider who emigrated to New Orleans in 1829.
