What does the name Maps mean?

The surname Maps was a baptismal name derived from 'the son of Mabel.' 1

One source notes the name could have been derived from Mabesoone; in the Domesday Book of 1086. 2 3

Early Origins of the Maps family

The surname Maps was first found in Lancashire where William Mabbeson was recorded in the Subsidy Rolls of 1332. Later, William Mabbesson was listed in the Subsidy Rolls of Suffolk in 1381 and in Yorkshire, we found William Mabotson, Mabetson in the Yorkshire Poll Tax Rolls of 1379. 4

Another source notes John Mabson, in the Patent Rolls, in 8 Richard II (1491.) The Surtees Society Publications lists Michael Mabson in York in 1494. 1

At this time, the shores of the New World beckoned many English families that felt that the social climate in England was oppressive and lacked opportunity for change. Thousands left England at great expense in ships that were overcrowded and full of disease. A great portion of these settlers never survived the journey and even a greater number arrived sick, starving, and without a penny. The survivors, however, were often greeted with greater opportunity than they could have experienced back home. These English settlers made significant contributions to those colonies that would eventually become the United States and Canada. An examination of early immigration records and passenger ship lists revealed that people bearing the name Maps arrived in North America very early:
