Etymology of Neder

What does the name Neder mean?

Three of the most common types of Jewish family names are patronymic surnames, which are derived from the father's given name; metronymic surnames, which are derived from the mother's given name; and occupational names, which were used to clearly indicate the profession of its bearer. The origins of the name Neder belong to the last type as it is derived from the German word nähen, which means "to sew." Tailors, therefore, would have originally adopted this Ashkenazic name. Eventually this surname would have been adopted the next generation of that person's family and so on, thereby becoming a hereditary name, even though some where along the line the profession of the surname's original bearer may have not been taken up.
