What does the name Pressey mean?

The name Pressey derives its origin from the term "dweller at the Priest's or Priests’ Land," 1 "the land belonging to the parson, from residence on land so styled. Frequently the 't' was dropped as the name is also now found as Pressland." 2

Early Origins of the Pressey family

The surname Pressey was first found in Cheshire where one of the first records was William de Prestlond was recorded 1312-1313. 1 A very rare surname, East Cheshire records show William Prestlond, Cheshire, 1453 and John Prestland, of Sounde, 1580. 2

Wardle Hall which survives today is located at Wardle, in East Cheshire and was the seat of the Prestland family for centuries but passed to the Woodhey branch of the Wilbraham family in the early 17th century.
