England Early Origins of the Woodlands familyThe surname Woodlands was first found in Devon and Cornwall. "The dutchy manor of Moresk [in St. Clements, Cornwall] was given by Edward the Black Prince to Walter de Woodland, usher of the chamber, who died without male issue." 1 "What is now called the manor of Tywarnhaile, is only a moiety of a large and ancient manor of this name, which in 1337, was granted to Edward the Black Prince, by whom it was shortly afterwards given to Sir. Walter de Woodland usher of his bedchamber." 1 "Woodland, [Devon] is noteworthy for the fact that the last male of that ilk, Sir Walter de Woodland, was a follower and attendant of the Black Prince. The tradition is yet current in the parish, of the fall, near Strachleigh, in 1623, of a meteoric stone weighing 23 pounds." 2 Early History of the Woodlands familyThis web page shows only a small excerpt of our Woodlands research.
