Early Origins of the Bernberg family

The surname Bernberg was first found in the Anhalt region, where the name was closely identified in early mediaeval times with the feudal society which would become prominent throughout European history. The name would later emerge as a noble family with great influence, having many distinguished branches, and become noted for its involvement in social, economic and political affairs. Bernburg is the name of a country town in the principality of Anhalt. It lies on the Saale river, mid-way between Magdeburg and Halle. It was formerly the capital of the duchy Anhalt-Bernburg. Bernburg consists of four parts, the old town "Altstadt," the hill town "Bergstadt," the new town "Neustadt" and the suburb of Waldau. The Bergstadt, with its moated castle (formerly the ducal residence,) was fortified by Otto III in the 10th century, and the new town was founded in the 13th century. Today Bernburg produces agricultural machinery. Market-gardening is also carried on, and there is a large river traffic in agricultural produce.
