What does the name Bodrugan mean?

The ancestors of the bearers of the Bodrugan family name are thought have lived in ancient Anglo-Saxon England. They were first found in Boddington, which had parishes in the county of Gloucestershire, as well as the county of Northampton.

Early Origins of the Bodrugan family

The surname Bodrugan was first found in Gloucestershire at Boddington, a parish, in the union of Tewkesbury, partly in the Lower division of the hundred of Westminster. "This place is distinguished as the scene of the last great battle fought (in 893) between Alfred the Great and the Danes, who, having intrenched themselves, were surrounded by the king with the whole force of his dominions, with the view of reducing them by famine. After having been compelled to eat their horses, many perished from hunger, and the remainder made a desperate sally upon the English; a great number fell in the action, but a considerable body effected their escape." 1

Upper and Lower Boddington are parishes in the union of Banbury, hundred of Chipping-Warden, S. division of the county of Northampton. 1

Bodrugan Spelling Variations

Until quite recently, the English language has lacked a definite system of spelling rules. Consequently, Anglo-Saxon surnames are characterized by a multitude of spelling variations. Changes in Anglo-Saxon names were influenced by the evolution of the English language, as it incorporated elements of French, Latin, and other languages. Although Medieval scribes and church officials recorded names as they sounded, so it is common to find one person referred to by several different spellings of his surname, even the most literate people varied the spelling of their own names. Variations of the name Bodrugan include Boddington, Bodington and others.

Migration of the Bodrugan family

Searching for a better life, many English families migrated to British colonies. Unfortunately, the majority of them traveled under extremely harsh conditions: overcrowding on the ships caused the majority of the immigrants to arrive diseased, famished, and destitute from the long journey across the ocean. For those families that arrived safely, modest prosperity was attainable, and many went on to make invaluable contributions to the development of the cultures of the new colonies. Research into the origins of individual families in North America revealed records of the immigration of a number of people bearing the name Bodrugan or a variant listed above: Martha Boddington who settled in Barbados in 1669; followed by members of her family.
