County Limerick is in the province of Munster and located in the Mid-West. The county's name in Irish is Luimneach, "the flat area," which is relatively accurate as the land consists mainly of a fertile limestone plain. Volcanic rock is found in numerous areas in the county, including Carrigogunnell, Knockfierna, and Pallasgreen/Kilteely in the east.
