Etymology of Halcro

What does the name Halcro mean?

Halcro comes from a place name. The roots of this Scottish place name; however date back to the great movement of the Norse Vikings. The ancestors of the Halcro family lived in Halcro, in South Ronaldsey, Orkney. The place-name is taken from the place-name Halcro in Caithness, where the family originated.

Early Origins of the Halcro family

The surname Halcro was first found in Caithness (Gaelic: Gallaibh), the northern tip of Scotland, a Norse/Viking controlled region from the 9th century, which became the Earldom of Caithness, in Scotland where they held a family seat from ancient times, and where family tradition claims that they are descended from the natural son of King Sverrir of Norway. At early times the family migrated to South Ronaldsay where they gave their name to the lands called Halcro. Today Halcrow is a hamlet in northern Manitoba, Canada, but the origin of the place is unknown.
