County Kilkenny was based on the historic Gaelic kingdom of Ossory (Osraighe). Kilkenny is the anglicized version of the Irish Cill Chainnigh, meaning Church (Cell) of Cainneach or Canice, believed to be related to the church and round tower, now St Canice's Cathedral.
