Early Origins of the St-Amand family

The surname St-Amand was first found in Normandy (French: Normandie), the former Duchy of Normandy, where they held a family seat in the seigneurie of St-Amand in Rouen. Their early endowment of the Abbey of St.Amand established them as one of the great philanthropic families, as well as being an important aristocratic family. Almaric St. Amand (c. 1314-1382), third Baron de St. Amand was justiciar of Ireland, son of John de St. Amand. "His ancestor, Almaric de St. Amand (fl. 1240), had a grant of Liskeard in 1222, and was heir of the lands of Walter de Verdun in Ireland. He was sheriff of Herefordshire and warden of the castles of Hereford and St. Briavel's in 1234. He was godfather to the future Edward I in 1239, and went on the crusade in 1240. " 1
