What does the name Stafferton mean?

The name Stafferton is of Anglo-Saxon origin and came from when the family lived in Stafford found in Staffordshire, Dorset, Berkshire and Devon. The surname Stafferton is derived from the Old English terms "ford" and "staef" meaning "staff" and can therefore be translated to the "ford marked with staves (stakes)." Stafferton is a topographic surname, which was given to a person who resided near a physical feature. During the Middle Ages, as society became more complex, individuals needed a way to be distinguishable from others. Toponymic surnames were developed as a result of this need. Various features in the landscape or area were used to distinguish people from one another. In this case the original bearers of the surname Stafferton were named due to their close proximity to such a feature.

Searching for a better life, many English families migrated to British colonies. Unfortunately, the majority of them traveled under extremely harsh conditions: overcrowding on the ships caused the majority of the immigrants to arrive diseased, famished, and destitute from the long journey across the ocean. For those families that arrived safely, modest prosperity was attainable, and many went on to make invaluable contributions to the development of the cultures of the new colonies. Research into the origins of individual families in North America revealed records of the immigration of a number of people bearing the name Stafferton or a variant listed above:
