England Early Origins of the Stuckley familyThe surname Stuckley was first found in Huntingdonshire at Stukeley, where Nicholas de Stiuecle was recorded in 1198. 1 The place name dates back to the Domesday Book of 1086 when it was recorded as Stivede. 2 Occasionally, the name originates in Stewkley in Buckinghamshire. 1 The Feet of Fines for Oxfordshire lists Geoffrey de Stiuecleg in 1224 and later the Subsidy Rolls for Sussex has an entry for Thomas Stukele in 1296. 1 "Two parishes in Devon, and a township in the parish of Brancepeth, in County Durham, bear the name Stockley." 3 4 The Hundredorum Rolls of 1273 has two early entries for the family: Ralph de Stockleye, Suffolk; and Pagan de Stockleye, Oxfordshire. 3 By the 16th century, strongholds of the family were found in Devon and Somerset. The latter lists a coat of arms simply "Stewekley of Somerset, 1595," while the former was home to Sir Hugh Stucley (1496-1559), Lord of Affeton, Devon, Sheriff of Devon in 1545. Hugh was the eldest son of Thomas Stuckley (1473-1542), of Affeton, Sheriff of Devon in 1521. Will Stutely or Will Stutly appears in two ballads in "The English and Scottish Popular Ballads," popularly known as the Child Ballads as a prominent member of Robin Hood's Merry Men.
